Safeguarding children

Rationale:

Policy and procedure:

We have a duty under the law to help safeguard children against suspected or actual 'significant harm'. Our policies and procedures are in line with those of the local authority's LSCB (Local Safeguarding Children's Board). We work closely with children and parents so that we can be aware of any problems that may emerge and can offer support, including referral to relevant agencies if necessary.

In our provision, we recognise it our moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and ensure the welfare of all children.

We endeavour to promote a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued

Duty of care:

We outline four main elements to our policy.

  • Prevention - through teaching and pastoral support offered to our children by staff;

  • Procedures - clear and concise processes in place to identify and report cases, or suspected cases, of abuse;

  • Support to children - an understanding of the impact of abuse and having staff who are able to support children through this;

  • Safer recruitment - procedures in place to ensure we have a suitable workforce, including volunteers.

Safeguarding is given a high priority in our provision. We have 2 designated leads for safeguarding and a further 2 members of staff trained to the same level ensuring we always have a designated person for safeguarding and child protection on site.

All staff receive regular training on safeguarding children.

Designated leads update their training every 2 years.

We provide a positive environment in which children feel safe to talk to trusted adults with whom they have forged strong relationships.

We focus on building children's self esteem and confidence while equipping them with the skills they need to stay safe.

We operate an open door policy with parents and carers. We engage regularly with 'home' to ensure better provision for children.

We follow the procedures set out by the local authority and adopt a multi-agency approach to child protection.
